February, 2011.
Subject:- Export of Onion in cut, sliced or broken in powder form.
Notification No. 13 dated 22.12.2010 prohibits export of Onion (all
varieties) including Bangalore rose onions and Krishnapuram onions fresh or
chilled, frozen, provisionally prepared or dried but excluding onions cut,
sliced or broken in powder form.
2. Note 1 of Chapter 7 of ITC(HS) Classification of Export & Import Items
(Chapter 7 deals with Edible Vegetables and Certain Roots and Tubers) stipulated
that reference to onions in this chapter includes onions fresh or chilled,
frozen, provisionally preserved or dried. This note has also been extracted in
the Notification No. 13 of 22.12.2010. Therefore, the item description in the
Notification No. 13 dated 22.12.2010 is clear leaving no room for ambiguity.
3. Accordingly, onions in (a) cut form (b) sliced form & (c) broken in powder
form can be exported freely. Onions in whole form whether dehydrated or not
would be subject to prohibition imposed by Notification No. 13 dated 22.12.2010
